Homeowners Insurance

Homeowners insurance is coverage to protect one of your most important assets in the event of a loss or a disaster: your home and its contents. in the event that a loss should occur. Policies can vary in price and coverage options from insurer to insurer. Your cost will be based on numerous variables: where you live, how much coverage you need, and many other factors. Your premium price will also vary based on your deductible. Essentially, a deductible is the amount you are willing to assume out of pocket for any losses before your coverage kicks in.

Homeowners is a package policy that provides two areas of coverage:

  • Your property and its contents, including any attached structures such as a garage
  • Liability for bodily injuries to other people or property damage that occurs on your property.

Homeowners policies have many other areas of coverage, such as payment for a temporary place to live should your home become uninhabitable and coverage for possessions in your car or while you travel.

Some things are typically not covered by homeowners insurance and would require separate policies:

  • Flood and earthquake damage
  • Expensive property or collections, such as antiques, jewelry or furs are covered, but there may be coverage limits. You may want to purchase additional coverage.

Home inventory

It's a good idea to keep an inventory of the personal possessions in your home and to keep multiple copies. If your home were destroyed by fire or storms, an up-to-date inventory can help you get your claim settled faster. Take a room-by-room inventory, save receipts for expensive items, and note serial numbers on appliances and electronics.
